ISO 45001:2018 - Occupational Health and Safety Management System


ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System was published in March 2021 and has officially replaced OHSAS 18001:2007 and SS 506:Part 1:2009 as of 31 December 2021. ISO 45001 provides a framework for managing occupational health and safety risks and opportunities. The aim and intended outcome of ISO 45001 are to prevent work-related injury and ill health to workers and to provide a safe and healthy workplace. It also helps organizations to eliminate hazards and minimize occupational health and safety risks by taking effective preventive and protective measures. ISO 45001 also helps organizations fulfill their legal requirements and other requirements.
 

With the revision in ISO 45001, the key changes made are:

    • Greater flexibility in how organization’s a document and structure their OH&S management system
    • Requirement for “documented information” rather than documented procedures and records 
    • Preventive action is no longer included as the standard is preventive
    • New focus on the “Context” of the organization
    • Emphasis on understanding internal and external issues
    • Importance of the needs of interested parties
    • A strategic approach to OHS management
    • Greater emphasis on the integration of OHS in the management of the business
    • Greater involvement and emphasis on senior management leadership
    • More emphasis on the concept of risk management
    • The explicit emphasis on legal and other requirements
    • Greater focus on the need to demonstrate compliance   
    • Greater emphasis on the hierarchy of controls   
    • Management of change specifically included   
    • Outsourcing and procurement made more explicit
